WWE and Netflix: Upcoming Collaboration
WWE Studios and Netflix are teaming up for a new, live-action family movie entitled “The Main Event”. Jay Karas will direct the movie and Larry Postel will write it. This project is the latest in a long line of ventures for WWE Studios and is the first of many family-oriented movies to be developed by the WWE to stream on Netflix, “The Main Event” will be about a boy who suffers bullying and dreams of becoming a pro-wrestler when he grows up. He discovers a magical mask that enables him to harness super-strength and become “The Spaghetti Kid”, the next WWE superstar.
“The Main Event” will star WWE Superstars Kofi Kingston, The Miz, and Sheamus. Alongside the WWE wrestlers, actors Seth Carr (Black Panther), Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris), Ken Marino (The Other Two) and Adam Pally (The Mindy Project) will also star in the film. Production for “The Main Event” began in mid-June in Vancouver, and is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2020.
WWE Movies Have Been Around for a While
WWE Films was first formed in 2002 and is currently known as WWE Studios Inc. The division has had a part in producing 55 films as of November of last year. The first film that the division had a role in producing was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “Scorpion King” in 2002, which was his first starring role following his film debut in “The Mummy Returns” the previous year.
In 2018, WWE Studios released three films. “Mohawk” (featuring Luke Harper), “The Marine 6: Close Quarters” (with The Miz, Becky Lynch, and Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels), and “Blood Brother” (featuring R-Truth).
The latest film release that WWE Studios had a role in was “Fighting with my Family”, directed by Stephen Merchant and released in movie theaters on February 14th, 2019. The movie followed the life of WWE superstar Paige and was co-produced with Dwayne Johnson’s production company, Seven Bucks Productions.
