Steven Universe: The Movie, Set to Air on the Cartoon Network


Steven Universe: The Movie is an upcoming feature musical film based on the Steven Universe TV Series. It will air on the Cartoon Network in the fall of 2019. The movie was first announced at the San Diego Comic-Con 2018 during a panel on Steven Universe. Steven Universe: The Movie will arrive on DVD later in 2019, as will a DVD set covering the entire TV Series. An accompanying movie soundtrack will be released digitally, as well as a CD version.

Steven Universe: The Movie was created by Rebecca Sugar, a New York Times bestselling author. It is produced by Cartoon Network Studios. Episodes of the Steven Universe TV Series are available now on the Cartoon Network, the Cartoon Network App and VOD.


Steven has inherited his mother’s (Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond) destiny as Earth’s savior. When the movie starts, he believes the time for defending Earth is done. But soon a new threat looms on the horizon, and Steven is thrown back into his role, to face his biggest challenge yet.

Musical Contributors

Steven Universe: the movie features collaborations with musical artists from different kinds of genres, such as:

  • Estelle Fanta Swaray, commonly known as Estelle. She is an English singer-songwriter, rapper, producer, and Grammy Award winner. She voices Garnet, Sad Spoon and one of the voices of Obsidian.
  • Aimee Mann is an American rock singer, songwriter, guitarist, and bassist. She voices Opal. Her song “It’s Not” from her 2002 album Lost in Space has been noted as one of Rebecca Sugar‘s biggest inspirations behind creating comics and cartoons with a space-thematic.
  • Patti LuPone is an American actress and singer, mostly known for her work in musicals. She voices the part of Yellow Diamond.
  • Uzoamaka Nwanneka “Uzo” Aduba is an American actress and singer. She voices the character of Bismuth. Uzoamaka Nwanneka Aduba’s first name means “the road is good” in her mother’s native Igbo language from Nigeria.
  • Aivi & Surasshu is a chiptune and piano duo, composed of pianist Aivi Tran and sound designer Steven “Surasshu” Velema. The two have created a great deal of songs for Steven Universe.


Cartoon Network Studios and Rebecca Sugar are the movie’s executive producers. Rebecca Sugar is also directing the film.

Rebecca Sugar created Steven Universe. She is an artist, composer, and director. She became the first solo female cartoon creator in Cartoon Network’s history when the network green-lit the Steven Universe TV Series in 2012.

Work on the movie’s storyboard occurred between late 2017 and early 2018.

Sunmin Image Pictures Co. is in charge of the animation process.

A Steven Universe: the Movie trailer will be released on July 19th, 2019 during the San Diego Comic-Con’s Steven Universe panel.
